WHO WE ARE
THE RUN DOWN
Rock climbing offers a variety of unharnessed benefits that are not yet made readily accessible for youth. Some families have the privilege of enrolling their child in a climbing program, while others may never have the opportunity to find if the sport resonates with their child in a meaningful way. Each year, indoor rock climbing becomes more popular and accessible especially now that it is an Olympic Sport!
The goal of The Young Ascenders is to make the benefits of rock climbing legitimately known and accessible.
Our primary focus is youth resiliency & mental health.
Rock Climbing helps us develop our social & emotional skills, ability to focus, depression & anxiety management, self-awareness, coordination, cognition, resilience, and other life skills. It is a powerful method of delivery for meaningful experiences, applicable metaphors and teachable moments that enriches our lives "off-the-rock".
YA is here to facilitate the exploration of meaningful experiences brought to us by the unique challenges that rock climbing has in store for everyone.
REAL EXAMPLES
Noah, a 4th grader who crushes complex puzzles but struggles with socializing & spatial awareness can thrive on a climbing team, especially with an informed and intentional coach who guides more than just his climbing. Maya, a 7th grader who loves chilling with screen time, normally struggles to focus for an extended period of time in school; climbing may provide her an opportunity to flex her "focus muscles" and help her become more resilient. It's time to realize the life changing potential of coaching the "whole kid"!

founder & managing directorMARIBETH OLSENAs a K8 teacher and climbing coach at Planet Rock Ann Arbor, Maribeth observed a potentially valuable method of teaching youth life skills using inclusive classroom strategies in the gym. When she integrated intentional teaching technique into her coaching, parents and peers observed social & emotional growth happening in the program's young climbers. Spotting the tip of the iceberg and searching for a way to eventually fulfill the requests for more specialized programming in Michigan, Maribeth replanted herself in the ripe 'ol soil of the Front Range climbing community to see what could grow.
